Gunghap: How Koreans Read Couple Compatibility

Before a wedding date is set in many Korean families, someone quietly checks the gunghap (궁합) — the compatibility between two birth charts. It's centuries old, it has outlived every dating-app algorithm, and it asks a more interesting question than "are you a match?": how exactly do these two skies meet?

Two charts, side by side

Gunghap is built on saju — each person's Four Pillars chart, computed from their birth year, month, day and hour. A reader lays the two charts next to each other and looks at three things:

1. Day master chemistry. Your day master is your chart's core temperament. Some pairs relate like metal shaping wood — one gives form, the other gives growth. Others meet like water and fire — dramatic, energizing, in need of a little earth to hold them. None of these are bad; they're dynamics, and knowing yours is halfway to tending it.

2. Element complementarity. Almost nobody's chart is balanced. The lovely thing gunghap looks for is when one person's abundance is the other's missing element — your fire warming their cold water, their earth grounding your wind-blown wood. Traditional readers call this a nourishing pair.

3. Two different seasons. Here's the part modern couples find most useful: you are always living in two different ten-year luck cycles (대운). One of you may be in a building decade while the other is in a harvesting one. A lot of relationship friction that feels personal is actually just... two calendars. Naming it makes patience much easier.
